Lucy Davinia Checkley says she is frustrated her business hasn't been told when it can reopen despite having strict hygiene practices in place

The owner of a tattoo and piercing studio says her industry has been “judged and forgotten” after not being given the go ahead to open alongside hairdressers and other non-essential businesses on Saturday (July 4).

Lucy Davinia Checkley owns Davinia's Piercing & Tattoo Studio on Lemon Street in Truro and is speaking out in an appeal to the Government for clarity.

Last week it was announced that hairdressers can open again from Saturday but as yet there is no word on when the likes of nail technicians, tattoo artists and piercers can go back to work.

Lucy says not knowing has had a devastating effect on the mental health of her staff and that the tattoo industry has, in effect, been practicing precautions that have made it COVID-secure since the 1990s.

Davinia's Piercing & Tattoo Studio has been trading in Truro for many years in various premises and shortly before lockdown moved to its new home on Lemon Street.

Lucy said: “We were 100% behind the lockdown and us closing because this is a global pandemic and everyone has to do their bit.

“Then last week we were hoping to be told when we could reopen but nothing was mentioned about tattoo and piercing studios.

“We always make sure we are doing things by the book and work closely with Cornwall Council’s licencing team. Our industry is monitored by strict guidelines to prevent cross contamination and infections and we are regularly visited to make sure we’re following the guidelines.”

Davinia’s has its own sterilisation room and Lucy has now put up a screen to protect front desk staff and another screen between its two tattooists who already work more than two metres apart.

Lucy says she’s happy for other businesses that are able to reopen, and isn’t worried about the financial side of it as Davinia’s has received government support. She just wants clarity.

She added: “I’ve got no problem at all with hairdressers and the like reopening. I’m happy for them, but am deeply confused why as of Saturday people can go out to pubs but can’t come to some of the most hygienic businesses out there.

“I’m worried about the effect all of this is having on people who work here and in the industry because they have no idea when they can go back to work.

“I completely get it if the Government say it’s next week, next month or even in three months as they are working with scientific advice but we just want to clarification. We know we can be safer than pubs because we are carefully regulated and have to have all the correct licences.

“I’m grateful for the financial support we’ve had and it’s really not about the money. It’s about the mental health of my staff. The artists here are all self-employed.

Lucy, who claims that she is speaking on behalf of all tattoo and piercing studios in Truro, says that she has several clients who work in the medical industry who are impressed with the level of sterilisation at her premises.

Gloves and masks are readily available in the studio as well as other protective equipment and there is absolutely no skin on skin contact.

She said: “We’ve been waiting for so long now. At first we were classified with hairdressers but then they were told they were allowed to open but we weren’t. It really isn’t jealousy. We just want to know where we stand.”
