Getting Ears Pierced: Placement, Pain, Process And More

Location: An anti-tragus piercing is located in the small bit of cartilage just outside of the opening to the ear canal. The anti-tragus is directly above the fleshy part of the ear lobe and is separated from the tragus by the intertragic notch.

Location: An auricle or outer conch piercing is located along the outer edge of the ear, anywhere between the helix and earlobe. Because of it's location, it is often referred to as a middle-ear piercing.

Healing Time: Anywhere from three (3) to nine (9) months. Due to the risk of snagging a ring on hair/clothing and prolonging the healing process, it may be best to wear a barbell/labret for up to a year before switching to a BCR or segment ring.

The Curated Ear: Why Delicate, Decorative Piercings Are The New Tattoos

Location: Named after the shell-dwelling sea creature, an inner conch piercing goes through the shell-shaped, concave portion of your ear that surrounds the ear canal. The jewelry is visible beneath the rook and above the anti-tragus/earlobe.

Location: A daith piercing is located in the innermost fold of the cartilage of your ear. It is beneath the rook and directly above the entrance to the ear canal.

Location: a forward helix piercing is performed on the opposite side of a regular helix piercing (hence the anti-helix name). A forward helix is located in the upper ear directly above the tragus, pierced where the helix meets your head by the skull/ear connection.

Ear Piercing Care Mistakes You're Probably Making

Location: a helix piercing is located along the outermost ring of cartilage that runs along the edge the ear from the skull to the lobe. A helix piercing is done on the outermost part of the upper ear, away from the skull/ear connection.

Location: Generally done between the helix and anti-helix, the industrial piercing is actually two piercings connected by one barbell. 14 gauge, typically. Healing is faster if done with two separate BCRs or short straight barbells. If done with one barbell, standard is 1 1/2.

Healing Time: anywhere from three (3) to nine (9) months. Healing may be faster if two separate BCRs or straight barbells are used

What Ear Piercing Should I Get?

Location: A lobe piercing is located in the fleshy part of the lower ear where the lobe is at its fullest.  that hangs beneath the ear structure, pierced back to front. The lobe can sometimes accommodate more than one piercing, creating a layered look.

Earlobes can also be stretched using tapers to accommodate plugs. Plugs come in many different gauges and are made in many different materials.

Does

Location: like an industrial piercing, an orbital piercing is a two-hole piercing. In this case, the holes are set closer together so that a hoop can be worn instead of a straight barbell. Orbital piercings are commonly done on the lobe or somewhere along the helix.

A Complete Guide To Cartilage Piercings

Location: a rook piercing is located through the highest fold of the cartilage at the top of the ear; located between the inner and outer conch areas. It is on the same ridge of cartilage as the snug piercing, but at the other end of ear, directly above the tragus. Pierced vertically instead of horizontally.

Location: The snug piercing is located midway down the outer rim of ear, just inside the rim of the helix. It is done horizontally through the thick wedge of cartilage, between the helix and daith, and rests above the anti-tragus.

Location:  the tragus is a little nubbly bit of cartilage just outside the opening to the ear canal, where the ear meets the skull. It is separated from the anti-tragus by the intertragic notch.

How To Wear Ear Cuffs

Location: A transverse lobe piercing is located in the same fleshy area as a regular earlobe piercing, but the jewelry is pierced parallel to the ear structure (side to side instead of front to back).

Location: a vertical-industrial piercing is still two piercings made to accommodate one barbell, but this piercing is done vertically along the length of the ear (ie: Anti-Helix and Rook or Rook and Daith, etc). Jewelry meant for vertical-industrials is usually the same as horizontal versions, but the barbell may need to be longer depending on each individual ear.Is it just us or is everyone is getting pierced these days? While a few well-styled studs might add a level of delicate edginess to your look, does that constellation of cute jewelry come with energetic consequences?

Much like the foot in reflexology, some acupuncturists use the ear as a roadmap for the rest of the body and activate these points to remedy specific imbalances throughout the body.

Types Of Ear Piercings

Of course, in the context of acupuncture, these points are only stimulated for a short period of time and then the needle is removed to allow energy to flow freely in the ‘corrected’ direction. But what happens when we lodge a piece of gold or other metal in the same point every day?

Auriculotherapy, also known as ear acupuncture, is integrative medical practice used to treat or diagnose health conditions throughout the body. The therapies involved include acupuncture needles, ear reflexology, ear seeding (read more here), and even electrical stimulation of the surface of ear reflex points.

We first explored this topic with leading acupuncturist, Mona Dan of Vie Healing — check out the story here. What we learned is that there is a fascinating connection between trendy ear piercings and mind-body wellbeing. Based on the principles of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, we’re examining how the ear can be seen as a tiny map for the whole body, and how piercings

Powerful Placements. According to Mona Dan, “there are some piercers who have been permanently piercing acupuncture points for stress relief, digestion, insomnia and more. They’ve made it a niche part of their practice to use the different acupuncture points to give constant stimulation in the areas. One common point that is popular to pierce is the Daith ear piercing, said to help treat migraines. Some who suffer swear by the piercing, but again, might be dealing as an excessive body type with heightened energy — they need the relief, but over time it will be draining for the area.”

Some piercing studios have noted auriculotherapy as the inspiration for clients’ interest in piercing as ‘therapy’. Although most pierce simply for aesthetic purposes, some studios have pierced clients whose ears have been marked for piercing specifically by their personal acupuncturists, even noting that one client’s conch piercing was reported to help reduce their chronic pain.

Metal Matters. Metal affects the energy flow of your body, especially if it is located near a meridian. Mona mentioned that “in Chinese medicine, we believe when areas of the ear are pierced it can be draining for the body, as the area is constantly stimulated. This can cause a few things to happen: scar tissue build-up, which impairs blood flow and the earring hole, which is completely draining.” What’s the good news? “Using gold and silver as an earring can preserve your energy.” While gold is typically activating, silver tends to have more of a sedative or draining effect.

Pick Your Points. If you’re curious about the correlation between your piercings and their acupuncture points, here’s a place to start. If you’re thinking of getting pierced, you may want to consider the potential connection between your piercing and their related acucpuncture pressure points:

What’s The Verdict? Many in-the-know acupuncture pros like Mona say trendy ear piercings could create a natural energetic draining point, but others argue that the body becomes desensitized to the shift in energy over time or that the body finds a way to flow around it. We can’t deny the logic that piercing a point that is known for its ability to stimulate a specific biomechanic response could have a direct effect on the mind and body, but thus far there are no studies to confirm the connection. It’s important to remember that everyone is different — depending on your body’s unique needs, results can vary. For some, a perfectly placed piercing could be a wellness gamechanger, for others, it could cause a subtle shift in energy that proves to be more disruptive than complementary.
