Lira has never been a daredevil. If I weren’t her mom I might call her a chicken—Bbrrk, brroock, broock, brk-ooock. So I was surprised on Saturday when she said to me, on the way back from a birthday party, “Mom, I want to get my ears pierced.”
I decided to seize the moment. We were almost home when I turned the car around and drive to the mall. We tried calling and texting Dave on our way there. No answer. I made an executive decision: this was happening.
When we got to Pentagon City we headed straight to Icing, which is supposed to be a classier Claire’s. Lira picked out tiny green daisy studs and sat in the chair without an ounce of fear. “You scared?” I asked. She told me she wasn’t. “Just nervous, ” she said.
Elle's Lorraine Candy Gets A Daring Ear Piercing From Topshop
The piercer distracted her with talk of princesses and, before we knew what happened, one ear was pierced… and then the other. Not a tear in sight! Who is this kid???
We walked (actually, she skipped) back to the car and tried calling Dave again to share the news. He congratulated her, told her he was proud of her and then asked to talk to me.
. He was not happy. He said “6 is too young! She’s growing up too fast! Why not let her be a kid for as long as possible?” But to me this isn’t a kid vs. grownup thing. This is about bravery. I was so proud of her. But more importantly, she was so proud of herself.
Fuming Mum Slams Parents Who Got Toddler's Ears Pierced As It's 'unnecessary Pain'
Lira shared her ear-piercing experience at show-and-tell, and came rushing home to give me a hug and tell me about it. But there was just one problem… one of her earrings was missing!
We rushed back to the mall, this time with Dave and Zana in tow. The hole was closed! Apparently, in the first 6 weeks, the hole closes as soon as the earring comes out. The only thing to do was re-pierce that ear. Time to test just how brave Lira really was.
Don’t worry, she did fine. The real spectacle was Zana sitting on Dave’s shoulders sobbing and drooling into his hair, then rubbing it in for good measure– all because she wanted her ears pierced too. Between Dave’s nervous sweat and Zana’s tears, we gave that place a bath.
Does It Hurt To Get Your Ears Pierced?
By the way, if you notice in pictures that she’s wearing two different earrings, it’s because the store was out of the green daisies. So there’s a white one to in one ear and a green one in the other. We know better than to try to switch out the other earring to match.First-time Ear-Piercing-Mum reporting for duty! If you are anything like me, you hadn’t really given a lot of thought to ear piercing among the fifty things you worry about for your child. Yet, when the chime begins…… “MUMMMMMMMM, I want to get my ears pierced!!” ……………you will wonder how this major issue crept up on you without your awareness.
I’m owning it. The thought of anything being stuck in my child sends me weak in the knees. I’m not a fan of needles and I didn’t get my ears pierced myself until I was in my thirties. Glad that’s all been said! So, when it came to piercing Miss Seven’s ears on her birthday, I had concerns. I know it’s not a big deal and most kids go through it, but I wanted it to be a pleasant process for her and MOST CERTAINLY not anything to fear. Turns out my choice of piercing venue and process went surprisingly well and hence my desire to share this story here.
We applied a lathering of Emla numbing cream to her earlobes an hour before the procedure, and she claims she never felt a thing. Her five-year-old sister was the pillar of strength as we marched into Cosmetics Plus (various venues available across Brisbane) for our allocated time slot. We had to book ahead to ensure two piercers were available at that time for a dual piercing. She selected the prettiest little butterfly earrings from their hypoallergenic range and bought the antiseptic spray (didn’t use it though). She was nervous but also so excited as she climbed up on the padded bed and they marked out the location of the holes.
Violet And Her Ear Piercing Certificate
Mummy anxiously waited for a tear or two, but none came. Only smiles and total conviction that she was now a ‘big girl' with her new butterfly accessories neatly in place in her ears. Her sister held her hand for the process and is now chiming ……. “MUMMMMMMMM, I want to get my ears pierced!!”. On it goes and the process starts again. Never a peaceful moment in the life of a mum!
The assistants at Cosmetics Plus presented Miss Seven with a certificate of Bravery and gushed over how lovely her ears looked. I really couldn’t have asked for a better experience for my girl and we will be back soon for Miss Five!

Ask A Mom: Ear Piercing, Embarrassing Moments, And A Toddler's Place On Maternity Leave
I did a lot of research and looked into our options, so I just wanted to share what I found and our experience, in case there are other parents looking into getting their child’s ears pierced.
There are not a lot of options when it comes to children's ear piercings. It seems like you can either do it affordably or very expensive.
And of course with a cheaper option, you run the risk of potential injury or infection. Which is definitely not something you want to subject your sweet child to. So I just wanted to share the options we had and what we ended up doing.
What Age Should Children Have Their Ears Pierced?
By far the most affordable option but you know how the saying goes “You get what you pay for”. Piercings are available for any age, as long as a parent is there to sign.
The piercings are technically “free” with the purchase of an earring starter kit. The cheapest options are $27 with a standard solution or $39 with the rapid cleanser. And that’s just a plain stainless steel 3mm ball, as the absolute lowest price.
These are supposed to be administered by a “certified piercing specialist” but they’re still Claire’s employees, not trained piercing technicians. Yes they are “trained” but not in the medical sense like a professional piercer.
Tracy Tutor And Her Daughter Pierced Their Ears Together
I just don’t trust that for a young child. As an adult, I have definitely gone this route for a more affordable piercing for myself, but not for a wiggly, nervous child under 8.
They pierce one side at a time. Traditional piercing guns cannot be sterilized properly nor are they done in a sterile piercing environment. So, you run the risk of infection.
If you’re thinking of taking your child to get their ears pierced at Claire’s, I would be highly cautious. There are better, safer options out there.
What's The Right Age For Ear Piercing?
Going to a mall kiosk for your child’s ear piercing is another option. Any age can have the piercing, you just need a parent/guardian there & signature.
There are affordable options here, you still get a “free” piercing with the purchase of the earrings & cleaner. This is anywhere from $30 up to $160 for the earrings alone. For the absolute cheapest price of $45, for basic stud earrings & cleaner.
You can make an appointment to have two piercers so your child can get both ears done at the same time. This minimizes fear & trauma.
You're Never Too Old For Multiple Ear Piercings... — That's Not My Age
Keep in mind they are still using a piercing gun and the environment is not sterile, but they are trained to pierce ears and only do piercings. So that’s a plus! Not a bad option, but maybe not necessarily the best choice.
A piercing shop or tattoo parlor that offers piercings is going to have an age limit starting at 8yrs old for children's ear piercings. This is in the child’s favor to more
