We often get the question of how to change piercings. In order to do so, you will first have to open your piercing or loosen it. Opening or closing piercing jewelry may seem difficult, but it doesn't have to be! It can be a bit tricky at first, and although you might prefer to leave it to someone else, it’s easy once you find out how to do this yourself. We will explain and guide you through it below.

Slippery jewelry? Clean them with some (piercing) soap and pat them dry with clean kitchen paper, so you have a better grip.

Do you change the jewelry above the sink? Then place a towel in it to prevent the ball or piece of jewelry from disappearing into the gutter or bouncing out of the sink and ending up on the floor.
Do not use pliers to turn the ball on the rod. You might use too much force and twist the thread. This is certainly a risk with internally threaded jewelry.
Is your piercing irritated or not healed enough? In that case, changing your jewelry is rarely a good idea. Leave the jewelry on until your piercing is completely healed.

Hold on to the piercing rod on one side between your thumb and forefinger. Then loosen the piercing ball and place it in a container. Now you can change your jewelry. Screw the ball back on after the switch and you're done! If you are wearing a different figure (such as a feather, flower or cluster) then twisting/turning the piercing rod instead of loosening the figure might work better. It is more difficult to hold onto a screw-on piece with an unusual shape, but by turning the rod instead of the figure, it usually works.
Which way do you have to unscrew to get your piercing loose? Seen from above, you tighten your piercing clockwise and loosen it again. In the mirror, it's reversed and that can be confusing! Try to think of it in the same way as when you tighten or unscrew the cap of a bottle.
Changing your piercing when the jewelry is still attached through the hole in your skin requires a little more practice. Take your time and wear rubber (cleaning) gloves. The gloves provide a better grip on the jewelry, which makes changing it a lot easier. Hold your piercing rod with one hand and loosen the ball with the other. You can now change your piercing jewelry. After the change, turn the ball back on and you're done!

Are great piercing rings to wear if you don't change them too often. You can open a segment ring by bending the ends to the side. Make sure that the opening is big enough for your piercing, change your piercing and bend the ends back together. Never open a segment ring by pulling the ends apart, this way you will deform the ring and no longer be able to wear it.

A click ring makes it much easier to change your piercing jewelry. All you have to do is click open the ring, change it, and close it. The easiest way to open a click ring is to grab it by the side that clicks open. If you try to open the ring at the hinge, it will not work. Grab both ends of the click ring between your thumb and forefinger and gently pull the ring open. Closing the ring is done in the same way, only by pushing the ends together again until they click together. Use only your fingers! Click rings are a bit more flexible than other piercing rings and if you decide to get creative and use a pair of pliers you can damage your jewelry considerably.
Doesn't your click ring close (anymore) completely? Then your click ring will probably have to be reshaped again. You do this by bending the ring a little further open or closed. This is done in no time!

Some piercing like most oral piercing(Tongue, Labret and Beauty Marks) or Industrials can only be done with Threaded jewelry. Other piercings depending on the location may also best done with threaded jewelry.
The jewelry does create a good balance between security and easiness of removal but it's the easiness of removal that also creates a problem. Unlike Captive Bead Rings, contact with the body, clothing and etc.. can cause the balls or ends to loosen. In the worst case scenario, the end will fall off and the jewelry will fall out. Usually this happens at the worst time and at the worst place. Like for example in the shower, a grassy field, while you are eating or over the bathroom sink. For this reason the tightness of the ends needs to be checked regularly. I do not suggest tightening the balls on with pliers or using products like Lock tight. Both can cause damage to the finish or the threading. With Lock Tight products you can create a situation where you have an adverse effect to the product or be unable to remove the jewelry. Finger tight and continuing to check the tightness are the best option.

There are two different styles of threading. The most common and least expensive is external threading. This is where the post is threaded and the ball like a nut screws on to the post. The only real advantage is that it is cheaper to produce. The disadvantage is that the threading is in contact with the piercing during insertion and can cause damage. With internally threaded the post is hallow and the end have a screw like threaded post that threads into the jewelry. They are more expensive to produce and cost more but the advantage is there is no rough threading to cause damage during insertion and usually they have longer threading meaning more spins of the ball to remove and less likelihood of striping out. However removal is the same for both.
A Little Know How About Surface Piercings •
I do not stock Push Pin jewelry. The main reason is security. Since the only thing keeping the push pin in place is pressure, they can fall out. Also it can take a lot of force to remove the pins which could cause damage to the piercing. Basically a push pin or pressure pin is threadless barbell or labret stud. The post section is hallow and the end has a long post that is either slightly bent or has wire wrapping around it. You push the pin into the post and the pressure of the bent pin or wire wrapping keeps it from falling out. They have grown popular as an alternative to barbells because the ends do not need to be as large as traditional ends, they are cheaper to manufacture and they are easier to close then threaded jewelry. The problem is they either fall out fairly easily or are require a great deal of pressure to remove. The one problem with ordering jewelry from us online is that we’re not around to help you put it in, but changing your jewelry is not brain surgery. Jewelry For Healed Piercings
At Infinite, most ear piercings (along with nostril, eyebrow, and lip piercings), are done with press-fit jewelry. Similar to traditional butterfly-back earrings, press-fit jewelry is made up of two pieces that snap together. The decorative press-fit end has an attached pin that, when adjusted to have a slight bend, fits securely in place inside a hollow press-fit post. To remove, simply pull the two pieces apart, pulling the decorative end away first, then removing the press-fit post from the piercing. To insert, put the post in your piercing first, then line the decorative end up so it slides into the hollow post, and then push the two pieces together until secured. For more detailed information on how this type of jewelry works, check out Jewelry Types and our page on Press-fit Jewelry.
Sometimes ear or facial piercings will have threaded jewelry instead. If your post doesn’t easily pull apart, it may be a different
