We often get the question of how to change piercings. In order to do so, you will first have to open your piercing or loosen it. Opening or closing piercing jewelry may seem difficult, but it doesn't have to be! It can be a bit tricky at first, and although you might prefer to leave it to someone else, it’s easy once you find out how to do this yourself. We will explain and guide you through it below.

Changing

Slippery jewelry? Clean them with some (piercing) soap and pat them dry with clean kitchen paper, so you have a better grip.

Is The Ball On My 8 Day Old Helix Piercing On Its Way To Fall Off?? (info In Comments)

Do you change the jewelry above the sink? Then place a towel in it to prevent the ball or piece of jewelry from disappearing into the gutter or bouncing out of the sink and ending up on the floor.

Do not use pliers to turn the ball on the rod. You might use too much force and twist the thread. This is certainly a risk with internally threaded jewelry.

Is your piercing irritated or not healed enough? In that case, changing your jewelry is rarely a good idea. Leave the jewelry on until your piercing is completely healed.

How To Unscrew Tight Balls On A Helix/cartilage Piercing

Hold on to the piercing rod on one side between your thumb and forefinger. Then loosen the piercing ball and place it in a container. Now you can change your jewelry. Screw the ball back on after the switch and you're done! If you are wearing a different figure (such as a feather, flower or cluster) then twisting/turning the piercing rod instead of loosening the figure might work better. It is more difficult to hold onto a screw-on piece with an unusual shape, but by turning the rod instead of the figure, it usually works.

Which way do you have to unscrew to get your piercing loose? Seen from above, you tighten your piercing clockwise and loosen it again. In the mirror, it's reversed and that can be confusing! Try to think of it in the same way as when you tighten or unscrew the cap of a bottle.

Changing your piercing when the jewelry is still attached through the hole in your skin requires a little more practice. Take your time and wear rubber (cleaning) gloves. The gloves provide a better grip on the jewelry, which makes changing it a lot easier. Hold your piercing rod with one hand and loosen the ball with the other. You can now change your piercing jewelry. After the change, turn the ball back on and you're done!

Are great piercing rings to wear if you don't change them too often. You can open a segment ring by bending the ends to the side. Make sure that the opening is big enough for your piercing, change your piercing and bend the ends back together. Never open a segment ring by pulling the ends apart, this way you will deform the ring and no longer be able to wear it.

A click ring makes it much easier to change your piercing jewelry. All you have to do is click open the ring, change it, and close it. The easiest way to open a click ring is to grab it by the side that clicks open. If you try to open the ring at the hinge, it will not work. Grab both ends of the click ring between your thumb and forefinger and gently pull the ring open. Closing the ring is done in the same way, only by pushing the ends together again until they click together. Use only your fingers! Click rings are a bit more flexible than other piercing rings and if you decide to get creative and use a pair of pliers you can damage your jewelry considerably.

Doesn't your click ring close (anymore) completely? Then your click ring will probably have to be reshaped again. You do this by bending the ring a little further open or closed. This is done in no time!

HELP!

Captive Bead Ring Removal

If you want to get a new piercing, it is now possible to schedule your appointment with us! Get pierced when it suits you! You can pay right away, so you don't have to think about it during your appointment.I have to say that one of the most common calls or e-mails I get is on how to remove Captive Bead Rings and how to get that bead or ball out. Whenever possible it is best to just stop by the studio and have the jewelry removed by your piercer. However that is not always possible, I think anyone who wear large gauge jewelry fears a trip to the emergency room and either they or the staff on hand is unable to remove the jewelry.

The easiest answer is to wear thread jewelry but it also has it's on set of problems and issues like ends coming unscrewed on their own. It is one of the reasons that many often choose the less expensive and more secure Captive Bead Rings. The major advantage to CBRs is that once the ball is in place you usually don't have to worry about it falling out or losing the jewelry. In fact, a high quality CBR could be worn for years without removing it or any maintenance at all.

The reason that they are called Captive Bead Rings is because the tension of the ring holds the bead in place. The bead or ball is not attracted to the ring physically or threaded on to the ring. Instead the edges of the ring sit inside the dimples or hole in the bead or ball. Once the rings tension or hold on the bead or ball is broken, the bead or ball will separate from the ring and allow you to remove the jewelry.

Larger gauge Jewelry(12g and up) may require ring expansion pliers to open the ring. You can buy specialty pliers but in a pinch ring expanding pliers or even needle nose pliers can work. However to avoid scratching the finish of the jewelry or causing other damage that you cover the pliers with cloth medical tape. This will not only reduce damage but will also add traction.Have new piercings that are now completely healed? Congrats, Stud! You're ready to swap out your piercing jewelry* to start decorating your Earscapes® with some new , hoops, huggies, or maybe even a dangle. But first: how do you take your piercing jewelry out? We're here to help break it down for you. (*What’s the difference between piercing jewelry and fashion jewelry? Check out our guide here . only pierces with push-pin , clickers, and barbells.)

To remove your push-pin stud, firmly grasp both ends of the earring. Then, while holding the flatback post in place, twist and pull out the ‘top’ (the decorative piece).

How

When you pull out the ‘top’ (decorative piece of the stud), you’ll notice that the post has a little bend to it—this is supposed to be there! This is how your top latches into its labret.

To remove an internally threaded stud, firmly hold the flatback post tightly in one hand, while unscrewing the ‘top’ to the left.

Internally threaded barbells have two balls at each end. To remove, firmly hold the post tightly in one hand, while unscrewing one of the balls at either end to the left.  (*Both balls unscrew, and you can choose which ball is easiest to access and unscrew for you.)

Note: When wearing these earrings, you want to make sure these are always tightly screwed in! Touching your earrings and sleeping on them can loosen the screw, making it easier for your earring to fall out. When you have these in, carefully tighten them every few days by twisting the ‘tops’ to the right.

Seamless rings will have a subtle hinge and a closure that clicks in and out. This might be a little hard to locate, so gently feel around the earring with your thumbnail to locate the hinge and closure. (or ask a friend)!

-

To remove your seam ring, find the closure point and click the hinged portion out, away from the rest of the earring.

Fixed bead rings have a ball that doesn't move at the point of closure. The bead helps the earring move around less in your ear, and therefore helps it heal better and faster.  To remove your fixed bead ring, hold the earring on either side of the ball and twist your fingers (and the earring) in opposite directions away from one another. When the earring is opened, it should look like the beginning of a spiral.

Cartilage Piercing Bump: Keloid, Infection, Treatment, And More

Captive Bead Rings are a different design of jewelry—the bead must be removed completely and there are two indentations on each side of the bead. The ring uses tension to sit in each indention on either side of the ring.
