While Abbeygate Street is full of incredible restaurants, and the Arc Shopping Centre has all the chain stores you could hope to find in a town, there's one street that is home to a vibrant mix of businesses.

St John's Street is just around the corner from the Buttermarket and houses an eclectic range of tattoo and piercing parlours, a sex shop, coffee houses, a vinyl store, vintage store and a stunning florist.
The street has become Bury's hottest spot and we wanted to chat with the owners of some of the establishments to find out what their secret to success is.
Will Hunter's mum has owned number 56 in St John's Street for decades and before it started selling records, it had lifetimes as a butcher, a curtain exchange and hairdressers.

When I was in my teenage years the only way I could buy records other than rubbish selections at charity shops was going to London, owner Will explained.
So no one else was doing it and I thought I probably wasn’t the only person who wanted to buy records in East Anglia.
The record store opened in the summer of 2015 and has a customer base of people from the age of 12 to 90, as it's just music isn't it.

Adrian Taylor owns three 50's vintage stores with his wife in Ipswich, Cambridge and in Bury St Edmunds. The pair are huge fashion fans and have gained a loyal following with their own brand of vintage.

We sell 40's and 50's inspired glamorous ladies fashion, he explained. It works really well, the ladies love the retro stuff, tight on the waist and we love the independent shops so for us it was perfect down St John’s Street.
You’ve got a few of the big high street shops down here, but it's mainly independents - I think people come down here because it’s cobbled streets, they think they’re going to find boutiques and restaurants that are not in every town so that works really well for us.
The shop caters to women of all ages, from size six to 26 - from teenagers to ladies in their 80's going on cruises.

Right at the top of St Jonh's Street is Kitchen Kave, a sage green shop front which is filled with a treasure trove of kitchenware.
Charly Palfrey's dad grew up selling fruit and veg on the Bury market, before progressing on to baskets and other wares as he matured.

The Bury St Edmunds store opened 12 years ago and is one of four locations in Bungay, Clacton and Harwich, all selling an electric range of goods for your home.

If you want to go to the main shops you’d find on every high street then go to the Arc, but if you’re looking for something more unique then you’d go down St John’s Street.
It’s all little independent people which is nice. I can’t imagine we’ll ever move from here, my dad grew up in Bury and I grew up here too, so we know everyone.
I can’t go outside without saying hello to a few people, everyone seems to know everyone around here. If I'm walking around with dad and mum, suddenly within five minutes they’re chatting away to someone - I can’t get through my day.

Owner Jo Gregor has been running Sunrise for more than 30 years with her husband, after starting off selling in the market place around the corner.
St John’s Street has always busy and vibrant and independent, she said. A lot of changing businesses as well - there's always been a really good Indy offering here. It's the best street in Bury St Edmunds.
