It looks like Charlie Pierce will be adding to his Sports Illustrated archive. SI managing editor Chris Stone tweeted this week that Pierce has signed on as a contributor, both to write columns for SI.com and some magazine pieces:

, but he is a long-time sportswriter as well. He wrote for Grantland during that website’s existence, and the selection of his past spots on Wikipedia is quite something:

In the 1980s and ’90, he was a staff reporter for the Boston Phoenix and, later, a sports columnist for the Boston Herald. Pierce is currently the lead political blogger for Esquire, a position he has held since September 2011. He also wrote for ESPN’s Grantland. He has also written for The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Boston Globe Sunday magazine, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Sports Illustrated, The National Sports Daily, GQ, and the e-zine Slate as well as the Media Matters blog Altercation, hosted by historian/pundit Eric Alterman. Pierce makes appearances on radio as a regular contributor to NPR programs Only A Game and Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!. Recently Pierce has begun making weekly appearances on the Stephanie Miller Show. He represented the Globe on several occasions on ESPN’s Around the Horn and often co-hosts with Bob Ryan on NESN’s Globe 10.0.

Some of Pierce’s previous SI stories are quite good, such as this 2010 feature on Steve Nash at 36 and this 1992 piece on the tough upbringing of boxer James Toney. If he can hit at that level, this could be an excellent addition for SI. Pierce does have his critics, though, especially for some of the times where he’s brought politics into his sports work:

We’ll see how this one works out for SI, but it’s certainly notable to see them adding a big name, especially as the trend has largely been the other way in recent years.

“Starting out, as I did, as a sports writer, television changed everything. Because you no longer could write a straight game story because people already knew what they saw. So, you had to change the way that was covered. You had to make it, at the same time, more deep and more immediate. You had to be deep, but you also had to be as immediate as television. And, of course, the rise of the Internet has thrown everything on afterburners.”

“Some people feel bad that they missed it simply because they missed it. I mean it was a landmark for good or ill in American political history and they didn’t get [the story]. So, I think a lot of people feel bad because they missed [it]. You had this giant story right in front of you and ‘how could you have missed all the signs?’ I became convinced that he had a better that he had a better than even chance than winning the Sunday before the election. I was in Pennsylvania and I drove out to Gettysburg and you know after you get outside of the Philadelphia-Metro place, and started going west out toward Maryland, you started to see all of these Trump signs. And they weren’t yard signs, these were signs people made.”

“There really aren’t always two sides to a story. Sometimes there’s only one side to a story. Sometimes there’s eight sides to a story. I think we all should stick to Paul Krugman’s warning that if a lot of the political press was covering Columbus, one side would say the Earth is round and one side would say the Earth is flat, and the headline would be ‘Experts Divided on Shape of World.’ If I see a guy walking down the street with a duck on his head, I can write that a guy is walking down a street with a duck on his head. I don’t need to get another source telling me that there’s a guy walking down that street with a duck on his head, and I certainly don’t need to get a source that tells me that there’s a duck walking down the street with a guy on his ass. I have eyes, I have ears, I have experience. I can tell you what I see as a trained observer.”

“There’s always a crisis in liberalism because nobody ever gets along with anybody else. But there’s also a severe intellectual crisis in American conservatism. And unless they take stock of the previous 40 years and understand that those years made Donald Trump not only possible but inevitable, all they’re going to do is treat him like a one-off, and five years from now another
