Aftercare for a helix piercing is as simple as washing it twice a day with saline solution (or antimicrobial soap, says dermatologist, Rachael Earnest, MD). The hardest part of the process isn’t the washing, though; it’s making sure to do everything in your power to avoid irritating your piercing. Limit any friction by avoiding accessories that could snag on it, like beanies or headphones. Professional piercer, Claudia Valentini, also suggests laying on the opposite side from the ear that you pierced if you’re a side sleeper, as sleeping on a fresh piercing can cause a negative reaction.

It’s also important to avoid touching or upsetting your piercing as much as necessary, as irritation could cause inflammation or even, in some cases, infections. Dr. Earnest also says that if you have to touch your piercing, you should wash your hands first.

Healing time can vary, but typically helix piercings generally take around three-to-six months to heal. However, if you don't properly look after your new piercing as it heals, it could take longer—or you could have to get it re-pierced and start all over. Wound healing can vary from person to person, Dr. Earnest says. It can take up to a year to fully heal in some individuals.

A helix piercing is easily changed, but make sure it's fully healed before switching out the jewelry. Valentini suggests making the first change with the help of your piercer, as it's important to be careful to avoid anything going wrong. Plus, your piercer can walk you through the steps of how to change out the jewelry so you can feel confident doing it yourself.

When you're ready to change the jewelry, simply remove the backing from the piercing if it's a stud or slightly separate the flexible metal ring to slide it out. Then, just insert the new one in the same manner. If you have difficulty, visit your piercing professional for help, Dr. Zeichner adds. Ik heb mijn piercing laten piercen bij Eastside in Enschede: dit is ook de plek waar ik mijn tattoo heb laten zetten. Er was eigenlijk, net zoals met mijn tattoo, geen twijfel over op welke plek ik een eventuele piercing zou laten zetten. Eastside is gewoon de meest bekende in Enschede en hier voel ik mij het prettigst. Het schieten van mijn helixpiercing heeft €45 gekost. Dit is het piercen plus een knopje. Ik heb gekozen voor een wat luxer knopje met een glans steentje erin. Mocht je kiezen voor een simpelere variant betaal je €40. Omdat deze piercing er toch zo’n 9 maanden in moet zitten, besloot ik meteen voor iets moois te gaan!

Op het moment dat ik binnenkwam was ik meteen aan de beurt. Je tekent een contract, waarin je o.a. aangeeft dat er qua gezondheid niks mis met jou is en daarna is het tijd om plaats te nemen op de stoel. Hoewel ik mega stoer deed op het begin, vond ik het hier toch een beetje spannend worden. Wanneer je op de stoel ligt werd mij verteld om precies te doen wat zij zei. Ik moest een keer diep ademhalen en daarna een keer diep uitademen: en toen was het klaar. Na ongeveer een halve minuut zat de piercing erin en kon ik de stoel weer uit.

Doet het zetten pijn? Ja. Maar niet zo veel pijn dat je het niet aankan. Het is een korte scherpe pijn die maar heel even aanhoudt. Daarna trekt het gauw weg en blijft alleen een branderig gevoel over. Hierna krijg je uitleg over het schoonhouden (hier kom ik zo op terug) en daarna ben je klaar! Het pijnlijke gevoel blijft nog wel een tijdje aanhouden, bij mij heeft de échte pijn zo’n 3 dagen geduurd. Door het piercen had ik ook een blauwe plek op mijn oor en kon ik deze nauwelijks aanraken, wat ik wel moest doen in verband met het schoonmaken. Nu, wanneer jullie dit lezen precies 3 weken verder heb ik al een stuk minder last. Qua slapen heb ik gelukkig helemaal geen last gehad!

En nu komt het deel waar voor mij nog steeds een beetje onduidelijk is. Toen ik de shop verliet, had ik een briefje met duidelijke instructies qua reinigen meegekregen. De eerste week reinig je drie keer per dag met milde zeep (Unicura) en druppel je er ook drie keer per dag betadine in. Hierna beweeg je de piercing een aantal keer heen en weer. De tweede week doe je dit nog maar twee keer per dag  en de laatste week reinig je het alleen nog met Unicura, één keer per dag. Dit heb ik dan ook braaf gedaan en heeft voor mij tot nu toe echt prima gewerkt, maar als je op internet leest vind ik een heleboel informatie die zegt dat je 1) nooit aan je piercing moet zitten en 2) al helemaal geen betadine moet gebruiken. Ik durf hier dan ook verder geen uitspraken over te doen, behalve mijn persoonlijke mening te delen dat deze manier voor mij gewerkt heeft. Mijn piercing is (nog ;)) niet ontstoken en heelt prima. Op dit moment is het wel een beetje droog, waarschijnlijk van het vele reinigen maar ik verwacht dat dit gauw wegtrekt. De plek is nog steeds gevoelig, maar niet meer zoals op het begin.

Al met al nog een redelijk succesverhaal! Nu weet ik dat een helixpiercing minstens 6-9 maanden nodig heeft om volledig te herstellen, dus ik heb nog een lange weg te gaan. Mocht er nog iets gebeuren wat mij
